It WAS Extreme
Now, ya'all remember that little show I went to a couple months back called the Detroit AutoRama. Of course you do. Well, down below the Cabo Center, beneath the Ridler contenders and the thousand or so other pristine show stoppers, there was another little show going on called AutoRama Extreme. And Extreme it was. This adjunct to AutoRama began a few years back as a way to include what some may call “the fringe element” in hot rodding. And just where do you put your unruly teenagers? Well in the basement of course. Upstairs the posh presented their rides, downstairs it was an avant-garde, edgy dare I say extreme crowd. AutoRama Extreme embraces the lifestyle of those folks who dig the early days of hot rodding. There were even like minded vendors and artists. In the land down below the adult beverages were flowing, rock and roll was blaring, tatoos were a showing and then there were the rides, rides, rides. Each more unique than the next. That's not to imply that the level of quality wasn't there, it was there and in droves. For every polished to perfection ride upstairs, there was a down and dirty, real deal ride just an escalator ride away. At the AutoRama Extreme there's a traditional, homegrown feel to the cars, not many trailer queens down yonder. Believe it or not there was a mechanical elephant standing guard. YIKES! I've got to say that elephant was one of the more "interesting" things I've ever seen at a show. Needless to say I didn't linger long over that one! AutoRama Extreme rumbled on for all three days and it was a hoot. From refinement to ruckus, talk about going from one extreme to another!
They were exaggerated, edgy, some were even exorbitant but they were all extreme. Now cast your eye at this bevy of automotive awesomeness otherwise know as the AutoRama Extreme.
