24th Annual Orphan Auto Picnic and then some…..
How do you have a great weekend? Start with a raucous "riot" of relics and end with a picnic party for our "abandoned" automotive friends. It was a great 2 for 1 weekend, the Relix Riot at the Gilmore Car Museum and then the 24th annual Orphan Auto Picnic, I was there for both and am anxious to bring you the goods.
I've decided on reverse order with my coverage, and bring you the Orphan Auto Picnic first. I have come to anticipate the Orphan Auto Picnic (OAP), it is consistently a one of a kind event, always attracting unique and unexpected rides and this year was no exception. I so throughly enjoy the OAP, all you have to do is look back over the past FIVE years of coverage and read my blogs about this event to understand where I'm coming from. I do tend to wax poetically over these rides so cruelly 86'ed by the automotive world so I don't want to repeat myself here. Suffice to say this years OAP was another stellar event with Corvairs, Hudsons, Metropolitians, Triumphs and the like gloriously filling the Kendall County Fairgrounds. There were even a few rides that were firsts for me. The 1950 Checker Cab, the last in existence, yes I said last, was super cool. Hollywood rescued this one for film fame and it is now the lone survivor form 1950 model year. It's in the loving hands of a local collector who brought it out to the picnic, it was awesome. Another first was the Comtesse, a micro French ride, micro is outting it mildly, itty bitty is more like it. I was lucky, and on the way in I was able to catch the Comtesse in action, check out the video, sorry, it's a little shaky.
The OAP was, as always, fantastic. I'm looking forward to next year as the OAP will celebrate the quarter century mark, a big milestone for a truly wonderful event. Although the marquees might be "gone" through the tireless volunteer efforts of the Chicagoland Corvair Enthusiasts, these automotive orphans will never be forgotten.
Have a look for yourself at what was out at the 24the annual Orphan Auto Picnic.
