23rd Annual Orphan Auto Picnic
Corvair, Hudson, Studebaker, AMC, Crosley, Metropolitan and more; they may be gone but will never be forgotten as long as the folks at the Chicagoland Corvair Enthusiasts have anything to say about it. With an event like the Orphan Auto Picnic, held annually for the past 23 years, these "Orphans" proudly gather thumbing their metaphorical fenders at those who thought to retire them in the first place.
There is an indescribable vibe at the Orphan Auto Picnic, for one, it's an incredibly friendly event, one of the most inviting I attend all year. The CCE doesn't charge admission, they only ask for a donation. They offer free food and beverages, the "adult" variety as well. It seems too good to be true but that's just the way they are. They want to put on a good event and from this girl's point of view they succeed in every way possible. Maybe its the notion that these supreme rides are considered "Orphans" in the first place that their custodians go above and beyond to celebrate this segment of the automotive world that doesn't get all that much attention. I myself am grateful that there are groups like the Chicagoland Corvair Enthusiasts that go to the effort to bring an event like this to the public ensuring these vehicular stalwarts will never be put out to pasture.
